About TRP
Hi there, I’m Kelsey Tushar (she/her) - welcome to Trauma Recovery Psychotherapy! I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (WA LMHCA license pending) and Certified Trauma Professional (CTP).
My treatment approach incorporates traditioanal talk therapy (psychodynamic psychotherapy), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, trauma theory, attachment theory, and somatic and embodiment techniques to support the regulation of your nervous system and alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. I take a holistic, customized approach to healing and help individuals explore themes of personal autonomy, authentic connection to self and others, curiosity, and purpose.
I also enjoy helping folx to discover and celebrate the strengths and joys of their neurodivergence, gender, sexuality, and cultural identities, fostering a more authentic and optimistic approach to life.
On a personal note, I live in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains with my high school sweetheart, our four children, and our dog, Murphy. In my leisure time, I enjoy hiking, reading non-fiction and fantasy, cooking and baking, watching movies, and listening to and playing music.
Specialty Areas
Dissociative
Disorders
I specialize in the treatment of dissociative disorders, particularly Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). It can be unsettling to hear voices, experience memory gaps, or feel like you have to hide your inner emotional life from those around you, for fear of being invalidated or mistreated. I take a client-directed approach to DID treatment that promotes curiosity, self-compassion, and collaboration with dissociated parts.
Treatment of DID is a cooperative, dynamic process between therapist and client that often takes place over many years.
Childhood Abuse
and Neglect
Growing up in a chaotic or unpredictable environment can often cause issues that linger into adulthood. You may be experiencing feelings of anxiety, panic, stress, depression, irritability, issues with codependency or inability to trust others, harsh self-talk, or numbing/checking out. You may also suffer from fatigue, nightmares, or sleep issues.
For abuse and neglect survivors with less dissociative symptoms, EMDR can be a tremendously effective treatment option to promote the regulation of your nervous system and mitigate feelings of panic or lethargy.
Religious Trauma
and Cult Indoctrination
I also work with adults who have experienced harm in religious environments or other high control groups, and are seeking to heal from the damage of indoctrination: persistent feelings of shame and fear, identity confusion, loss of purpose, matters of sexuality/gender, and strained relationships with loved ones.
Teachings of sinfulness and eternal punishment, the promotion of rigid gender roles and the repression of healthy sexuality, the expectation of conformity, and the fear of exclusion all have lasting psychological consequences that can be explored in therapy.

The TRP Approach
My therapeutic approach is rooted in curiosity, and in our sessions together, I will invite you to explore deeper layers of your thoughts, emotions, and relationship dynamics, helping you to gain a better understanding of yourself. I will encourage you to bring your internal and relational experiences to our time together in session, so we can analyze where you may be feeling stuck, confused, frustrated, or overwhelmed.
My style of therapy often feels like a collaborative dialogue, where we are both discovering insights together. My hope is that our work feels like a supportive partnership where you feel empowered to engage in a way that is not only meaningful for your personal growth, but that is tailored to your unique needs. I encourage clients to bring different forms of emotional expression into session, including their dreams, artwork, spirituality, and more.
Working with me, you can expect my approach to be conversational, gentle, and honest, built on a foundation of safety and trust. I hope to provide a calm, welcoming atmosphere where you can feel safe to express yourself without fear of judgment. As a client-centered clinician, I will take your lead in what you would like to work on in therapy, but may also ask you questions about your family of origin, experience in fundamentalist religion or other high control groups, and history of abuse.
Most importantly, we will explore the hopes and desires you have for your life and relationships, with the goal of helping you cultivate a life marked by self-trust, confidence, and healthy intimacy.
-
Dissociation is a psychological response where you may feel disconnected from your thoughts, feelings, or sense of identity, often as a way to cope with trauma or overwhelming stress. This can manifest as feeling detached from reality or from yourself or your body, experiencing memory gaps, or hearing voices.
I can help by guiding you in grounding and relaxation techniques, working through the underlying trauma, and help you to communicate and collaborate with the dissociated parts of yourself, fostering a sense of connection within you and with the world around you. -
Childhood abuse and neglect refer to harmful experiences in which a child is physically, emotionally, or sexually harmed, or is deprived of basic needs like food, safety, or emotional care. These experiences can lead to long-lasting emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues in adulthood.
I provide a safe, nonjudgmental space for you to heal your childhood trauma, helping you to develop healthy coping strategies, assist you in navigating complicated relationship dynamics, and work with you find a sense of self-empowerment. -
Religious trauma refers to the emotional, psychological, and spiritual impact of abusive religious practices, beliefs, or institutions, often leading to debilitating feelings of guilt and shame. Cult indoctrination involves manipulation and control tactics used to enforce extreme beliefs, typically isolating individuals from outside influences and stunting their personal growth.
I can help by offering you a compassionate space to explore these experiences, gently challenge detrimental ingrained beliefs, and help you to rebuild a sense of self and hope for the future. -
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Through guided bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, audio), EMDR helps rewire the brain’s response to distressing memories, reducing their emotional intensity. This process enables individuals to reframe and integrate these memories in a healthier way, leading to relief from symptoms like anxiety, flashbacks, and depression. EMDR is a highly effective treatment for trauma, offering long-term healing without the need for extensive verbal processing.
-
I offer 50-minute psychotherapy and EMDR sessions at a rate of $200. I offer discounted rates for EMDR intensives ($150/hour).
I accept debit, credit, flexible spending accounts (FSA), and heath savings accounts (HSA) for payment.
-
Yes, I reserve half of my caseload for discounted rate slots to ensure that my services are accessible at all price points, including several “pay what you can” slots. I base my discounted rates on an economic justice pricing model that takes into account one’s access to safe housing, reliable transportation, comprehensive healthcare, and financial resources. Please contact me to inquire about sliding scale availability. PLEASE NOTE: all of my discounted and “pay what you can” slots are currently full.
-
No, I am not paneled with any insurance companies.
I do not accept insurance in order to maintain greater flexibility and autonomy in the care I provide. Trauma treatment is a complex process, one that generally takes place over many years and requires a certain level of creativity and flexibility in approach.Insurance companies often impose constraints on treatment options, frequency of care, session length, reimbursement, and adds a level of complexity and confusion for both the client and the therapist, hindering the therapeutic process.
By not working with insurance, I am able to prioritize individual client needs, ensure client confidentiality, and offer a more personalized treatment approach to trauma therapy, without the administrative and financial constraints typically associated with insurance involvement. It also allows me greater flexibility to offer reduced rates to those who need it.
If requested, I am happy to provide a superbill for you to seek reimbursement under your out-of-network benefits.
-
Generally, I see clients once or twice per week and I am not readily available to clients between sessions.
It’s important to note that I do not provide in-person therapy, psychiatric services, medication management, hospital admitting privileges, or crisis intervention.
If you’re in need of these types of services, I can help you find the appropriate professionals who specialize in those areas while we work together on your emotional well-being in individual virtual psychotherapy, up to two or three sessions per week.
If you are in crisis, please call the King County Crisis Line at 206-461-3222 or 911.
-
This is an important question for individuals seeking a therapist for healing from religious trauma or cult indoctrination, and I prefer to be transparent on this topic.
I was raised in a Catholic family and then I was active in conservative evangelical Christianity for much of my life. Now, I do not hold any particular beliefs about a higher power or an afterlife, but I do find many practices to be spiritually fulfilling. For me, that looks like spending as much time as I can in nature, laughing with my family, and snuggling my dog, Murphy.
